Here I am at the computer thinking out loud for the first time. It's a new year and new blog.
My inspiration is the group of visionaries that I call VIP Leaders. They know what they want and they can see it. They know how to get there and work with persistence to move towards it. Most important, they have a reason that makes them better for wanting to achieve it, knowing that when they do they will be wiser than they were when they started. VIP Leaders have vision, influence and purpose.
Congratulations to each of the VIP visionaries that I worked with in 2007. You inspired me.
Here's to bigger successes in 2008.

The definition of leadership is the ability to move a group of people toward a common goal. I have enjoyed the privilege of leadership for more than 35 years. I must confess, however, that early on, my intentions were only self-serving.
I was the boss; I used my position power to get where I wanted and I was a bully. This leadership technique made people move away from me instead of with me. When we did reach a goal, it was always hard to rally the team towards the next one. It was lonely and exhausting.
I began to study successful leaders and their methods. My pursuit of true leadership became relentless. Piles of books describing transformational leaders provided me with so many "aha!" moments that I was excited to try new things.
With a new focus on individual achievement, we were able to celebrate every success, not just one, and reach our goal. It was a great way to work. We worked hard and we were satisfied. When it goes the right way, you know it.
I still try to do - and say - the right things (instead of only doing things right). As a coach, I want to take the high road but I sometimes miss the turn. This blog is an attempt to share my right steps and my missteps along with observations about the way that I see things work.
These periodic anecdotes are not meant to be instructional. They are indulgent musings and I welcome your comments.
